The Value of Void

The Value of Void

“The void is not absence: it is the space where life happens.”

Architecture is often associated with the construction of objects, walls, and volumes. Yet just as important as what is built is what is deliberately left unoccupied. The void, the in-between space, has become an essential resource in contemporary architecture, where spatial quality depends less on quantity and more on intention.

Intermediate spaces allow us to breathe, connect, and move through. They are courtyards, double-height spaces, daylit corridors, terraces, thresholds, and transitions that structure the user’s experience within a project. These voids organize the flow of light, air, and people, becoming silent protagonists of design.

By freeing areas from strict programming, opportunities emerge for encounters, pauses, and new ways of inhabiting space. The void gives architecture rhythm and balance, much like a musical composition.

At OA+, we understand that designing voids is designing possibilities. These intermediate zones allow projects to breathe and adapt to those who inhabit them, adding both functional and emotional value. In a saturated world, the void becomes a necessary luxury.
